2010 One Book One New Orleans Program

A campaign for literacy and community, One Book One New Orleans calls on residents in New Orleans to share the reading of the same book at the same time every Fall. It is a joint project of the YLC and Literacy Alliance of Greater New Orleans. The 2010 OBONO community-wide reading selection is "Satchmo: My Life in New Orleans, Louis Armstrong's 1954 memoir.

Synesthesia Exhibit Opening Reception

A Blending of the Senses!
Visual artist and musician Carl Joe Williams has returned to his native New Orleans. The George and Leah McKenna Museum of African American Art will present an exhibition of his new collection of art work, called “SYNESTHESIA: A Blending of the Senses”, with an opening reception on August 28, 2010 from 6pm-9pm.
The art work will focus around paintings and found objects such as: wooden palettes, doors, musical instruments, tires, televisions, etc. Found objects are a continuum of a narrative flowing through the work, becoming elements of a story intricately woven into a work of art in order to create a new meaning and new context.
On view through October 9th, Williams’ exhibition is simply a blending of the senses focused on art and music: seeing, sounds, and hearing colors. As an artist and musician, Williams heightens the exhibit visitors’ sensory experience with an accompanying musical CD, featuring Mario Abney and Zena Moses, that is also entitled Synesthesia. It is his vision to create an exhibit that infuses visual art, music, and spoken word (rap/poetry).
